The Garden covers approximately 2 acres (nearly 1 ha) partly woodland partly perennial border with views to the sea. Some of the trees are 40 years old, the magnificent Magnolia Cambili on the front lawn, Pin Oaks, Van Houte Elm, Copper Beech & Michaela. Later plantings comprise of collections of Magnolias (from the world famous Jury Nursery), Rhododendrons, Camellias and Reticulatas.
Lilies abound in January & February especially the Orientals (some grow nearly 8ft (around 200cm) high as they do very well here).
Recycled mussel floats are used to grow special bulbs and lilies. In the large vegetable garden they help produce our strawberries.
Clumps of daffodils flower in September in the Orchard and alongside the driveway followed by our native clematis "Paniculata" in October.
Old roses line the back of the perennial borders.
In summer a substantial collection of hydrangeas flower sporting very deep blues due to the acid soils.
A subtropical area at the back of the house is home to a collection of brugmancias and a huge Bird of Paradise.
The new tropical garden in the pool area contains palms, (Nikaus) Tree ferns, Australian Frangipani and several varieties of Canna lilies and Taro with Begonias for a splash of colour.
The garden is listed with the NZ Garden Trust and it has also been part of the Hunters Garden Marlborough Sounds Champagne tour since its inception. These tours occur in early November each year (bookings essential). The garden is open to visitors all the year round - Children free, Adults $5.00, Groups welcome. Please ring first. Mouthwatering?
